Mobile Run-Flat Tyre Replacement in Southampton, Day or Night
The pressure light is on, the car still feels more or less normal, and there is no spare in the boot. Run-flats change what happens next, so here is the plain version: what the tyre is doing, why driving on it usually finishes it, and what your choices are once we are there.
What a Run-Flat Actually Is
An ordinary tyre holds the car up with air. The rubber is really just the container for it, which is why a conventional tyre sits down on its rim the moment the air leaves. A run-flat is built the other way round. Its sidewalls are heavily reinforced, stiff enough and thick enough to carry the weight of the car on their own for a short while with no air in the tyre at all.
That is the whole idea of it. It is not a puncture-proof tyre and it is not a self-sealing one. It is a tyre that keeps its shape long enough for you to get somewhere safe, instead of stopping in a live lane of the M27.
That short while has two limits on it and they apply together: a maximum distance and a reduced maximum speed. There is no single figure we can print here, because it is not the same on every car or every tyre, and driving to somebody else's numbers is how people ruin a tyre they could have kept.
Yours are marked on the sidewall or set out in the vehicle handbook. Treat both as ceilings rather than targets, and read them as what they are: enough to get you off the motorway and onto a forecourt or a quiet side road, not enough to finish the journey and come back tomorrow.
Not everybody knows they have them. Run-flats arrived as standard equipment on a lot of cars without much being said about it, and plenty of drivers only find out on the day something goes wrong. There is a marking on the sidewall, though the letters are not the same on every make, and the handbook will say.

The other half of the story is what the car does not have. Vehicles built around run-flats usually come with no spare wheel, because the run-flat is meant to be the spare. Very often there is no jack and no wheel brace either, and the well under the boot floor holds a foam tray or something electrical instead.
None of that matters until the day the pressure light comes on. And because a deflated run-flat does not slump onto the rim the way a normal tyre does, and often does not change how the car feels a great deal, the pressure monitoring system is generally the only thing telling you anything is wrong at all.
New cars sold in this country have had to carry one for years now. On a car running run-flats it earns its keep, so if that light comes on, believe it.
Why a Run-Flat Usually Cannot Be Repaired Afterwards
This is the part most drivers are never told, and it is the reason this page exists. While the tyre is deflated, everything the air used to do is being done by the sidewall. It flexes far more than it was ever built to and it gets hot doing it, and heat is what does the damage.
The rubber and the reinforcement inside begin to break down, the inner liner scuffs and creases, and the structure quietly loses its strength. All of that happens inside the tyre, where you cannot see it. The outside can still look perfectly respectable. A run-flat that has been driven on while deflated is very often finished, and it will not look finished.
So the puncture itself stops being the question. On a conventional tyre a clean nail in the middle of the tread is usually repairable. On a run-flat that has been run flat, the nail is not really the problem any more; the carcass is, and a repair there would be a neat patch on a tyre that has already been compromised.
Tyre manufacturers differ on this as well. Some do not permit repairs to their run-flats at all, others allow it only within conditions. The honest answer is that it depends on the tyre and on what has happened to it since the air left, which is why nobody can settle it over the phone.
What we do is what we would do with any tyre, with rather more riding on the result. The wheel comes off the car, the tyre comes off the rim, and the inside is inspected with the object still in place. If the light came on and you stopped there and then, and the tyre has not been driven on deflated, a repair may well be possible where it is safe and legal to carry one out.
If it has been driven on flat, expect to be replacing it. We would far rather tell you that on the driveway, with the tyre in front of you, than fit a repair we do not trust and leave you to find out later.
Mixing Run-Flats and Ordinary Tyres
One tyre has gone and there are three good ones on the car, so the question comes up straight away: can you not just put an ordinary tyre on that corner? It is a fair question. It does not have a simple yes for an answer.
A run-flat and a conventional tyre of the same size do not behave the same way. The run-flat has a much stiffer sidewall, so under braking and through a bend the two sides of that axle are working differently, and that difference is felt through the car rather than seen. Many vehicle manufacturers advise against mixing the two on one axle and some do not permit it.
There is a second catch behind the first. Put a conventional tyre on a car that carries no spare and no jack, and that corner has no limited mobility left in it at all. The next time it deflates, the car stops where it is standing.
Like-for-like is the safe answer, and on some vehicles it is the only one the maker will accept. That means the same size, the same load and speed ratings, the same run-flat construction, and sensibly matched to whatever is on the other side of the axle. Coming Off Run-Flats Altogether
You can take a car off run-flats and put conventional tyres on it, and plenty of people do, usually at the point where the first set has worn out. It is a perfectly legitimate choice. It is just that, though: a decision to be made deliberately, not something to drift into one corner at a time.
If you do it, do it in fours, or at the very least in axle pairs, because half a car on one type and half on the other is the mixing problem again with more places to hide.
What changes first is the ride. That stiff sidewall is what makes a run-flat work, and it is also what you feel over every ridged and patched stretch of the A31. A lot of drivers find conventional tyres noticeably softer, and the steering feels different with them. The choice of tyre widens as well, because far more patterns are made in conventional form than in run-flat.
Set against that, you give up the one thing the run-flat was there to do. Once a tyre can go properly flat, a puncture means stopping where you are, and the car still has no spare wheel and probably nothing to lift it with. Some drivers are entirely content with that, particularly if the car rarely leaves town.
Others are not. What nobody wants is to discover it for the first time in the dark on the hard shoulder. It is also worth reading what the vehicle maker says before you commit, because on some cars the suspension is set up around run-flat sidewalls.
Whichever way you go, keep the pressure monitoring working. Cars go about it in one of two ways and the difference matters at the wheel. Some carry a sensor inside each wheel, which puts it in play any time a tyre comes off the rim. Others carry nothing inside the tyre at all and work out that one is going down from how fast each wheel is turning, and those are reset through the car rather than handled at the roadside.
So mention on the call that the vehicle has a monitoring system, and if you happen to know which sort, say that too. Some cars pick the sensors up again on their own after a short drive, others want resetting, and the handbook is what settles it for yours. A car that has moved onto conventional tyres needs that warning more than it did before, not less, because now the tyre will go down properly and the sooner you know, the better the ending.

The pressure light is on but the car drives normally. Can I carry on?
Not as though nothing has happened. A deflated run-flat holds its shape, so the car feeling normal tells you very little. There is a maximum distance and a reduced speed the tyre was designed for in that state, they are on the sidewall or in the handbook, and they are not the same on every car, so use yours rather than a figure off the internet. Get somewhere safe and off the traffic, then stop and call. Every extra mile is more heat going into the sidewall, and the sidewall is what decides whether you keep the tyre.
Can you repair a run-flat?
Sometimes. It comes down to what the tyre maker permits and whether the tyre has been driven on while deflated. If it has, the reinforced sidewall has been carrying the car and the damage is internal, where it does not show, and a repair is not advisable however tidy the puncture looks. Some manufacturers do not permit run-flat repairs at all. We take the wheel off, take the tyre off the rim, look at it from the inside and give you a straight answer. If we do not think a repair would be safe and legal, we will not carry one out.
Can I just put a normal tyre on the one wheel?
It is not a decision to take at the roadside without knowing what the car wants. A conventional tyre has a much softer sidewall than the run-flat it would be sitting opposite, so the axle is no longer balanced, and many vehicle manufacturers advise against that or do not permit it. It also leaves that corner with no limited mobility, on a car that almost certainly has no spare. Like-for-like replacement is the safe route and some vehicles require it.
