The Key Is Missing and the Wheel Will Not Come Off

It tends to turn up at the worst possible moment. You have a flat on the hard shoulder, or a soft tyre on the drive before work, and the wheel will not come off. One fixing on each wheel is a locking one — a nut on most cars, a bolt on a lot of German ones — and the key that fits it is not in the boot.

There are three usual ways you end up here. The key was never handed over when you bought the car, and nobody noticed until a wheel needed to come off. The key is somewhere in the house, the garage or a previous owner's toolbox, and no amount of searching is bringing it back. Or the key is right there in your hand and it no longer grips, because the nut has been rounded off by an over-tightened air gun, or the key itself has split, or years of salt and grit have worn the pattern away.

Whichever it is, the effect is the same. One small nut is holding the whole car still. The spare in the boot is no use to you, and a tyre that would otherwise be a straightforward swap is not going anywhere until that nut is off. Taking a wheel off without the key needs a hardened extraction socket sized for that nut, and the socket has to come to the car rather than the car to the socket. That is what is on the van. That is the call we come out for.

What Happens When We Get There

We look at the nut before anything touches it. A missing key, a rounded head and a nut seized in with corrosion are three different problems and they want three different approaches. Getting that judgement right at the start is most of what keeps the wheel in one piece.

Then the extraction socket goes on. These are hardened sockets cut with a reverse spiral inside. The socket is driven down over the head of the nut, and turning it in the loosening direction makes the spiral bite harder instead of slipping, so the nut winds out with the socket still gripping it. The nut is sacrificed in the process — that is what it is designed to do.

Your alloy is not. The face of the wheel is protected before we start, and the socket is seated squarely on the nut rather than anywhere near the rim. Some nuts come away easily. Some are seized solid and take patience and a longer bar. We would rather take our time than rush a wheel that costs real money to replace.

Once the nut is out, a replacement goes on in its place, matched to the thread and the seat of your wheel and torqued to the proper setting rather than hammered down. And because there is a fully equipped van already at your vehicle, whatever brought you to this point can usually be sorted in the same visit — the puncture repaired if it is safe and legal to repair, or a new tyre supplied, fitted and balanced on the spot.

If the other three wheels are still carrying locking nuts you have no key for, say so while we are there and we will talk you through the sensible thing to do about them.

What comes out with the van

Paying for it

What It Costs, and When You Pay

Extraction is specialist work with specialist tooling, so a charge may apply on top of the tyre work itself. We will not spring it on you. You are told what the job comes to while you are on the phone, before a van is dispatched, and nothing gets added to it afterwards because the nut turned out to be a stubborn one.

If you would rather not go ahead once you have heard it, that is genuinely fine, and it costs you nothing.

You pay when the work is finished and you are ready to drive away, never before we arrive. There is a card terminal in the van taking contactless, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa and Mastercard, and we take bank transfer or cash just as happily. No need to hunt for a cash machine in the dark.

Getting to You

We are out 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A seized locking nut does not wait for opening times, and neither do we. When you ring, you speak to the technician who will be driving to you, not a call centre.

The response window for your area is set out with the areas below, and it is the honest one for where you actually are rather than one figure stretched across the whole coast. Tell us the make, model and year of the car and what the nut looks like, and Abu Bakar or a skilled mobile technician sets off with the right sockets already on board. A photo of the nut helps more than you would think.

Where We Come Out To

We are based in Southampton and cover Hamble-le-Rice, Winchester, the New Forest, Salisbury, Bournemouth and Chichester. We keep an eye on the M27, M3 and A31, because that is where the urgent calls tend to come from when a tyre lets go at speed and the key is nowhere to be found.

It does not have to be the roadside, either. Plenty of locking nut jobs happen on a driveway, in a works car park, or the morning of an MOT when a wheel suddenly has to come off and there is no key for it. Wherever the car is standing, that is where we come to it.

Questions People Ask Us About Locking Nuts

I have lost my locking wheel nut key. Can you still get the wheel off?

Yes, in the ordinary run of things — that is what the extraction kit is on the van for. We carry extraction sockets that grip the head of the nut and wind it out without the key ever being involved. Tell us the make, model and year of the car when you call, so we set off with the right kit on board rather than working it out in your driveway.

Will you damage my alloy wheel?

Protecting the wheel is the whole skill of this job. The face of the alloy is covered before we start and the socket sits on the nut, not on the rim. Some nuts are badly corroded or already chewed up by the time we see them, and if we think there is any risk to the wheel we will say so plainly before we begin, not afterwards.

Do I get a nut back on the wheel afterwards?

You do. The old nut is destroyed by the extraction, so a replacement is fitted in its place, matched to your wheel and torqued to the correct setting. You will not be driving away with a wheel one fixing short.

Someone has already had a go and rounded it off. Is it too late?

Usually not. A rounded nut is one of the most common reasons people ring us, and extraction sockets are made for exactly that shape of head. It can take longer than a nut that has simply lost its key, but it is ordinary work for us rather than a last resort.

How much is it?

A charge may apply for the extraction, on top of any tyre work, and we quote it on the phone before we dispatch. There are no figures on this page because the job depends on the state of the nut and on what else the vehicle needs — we would rather give you a real number while you are talking to us than a figure on a page that cannot see the nut.

One Nut Should Not Cost You Your Day

Ring us and describe what you are looking at, or send a photo of the nut. Abu Bakar or a skilled mobile technician will come to you with the extraction kit already in the van, day or night.
