You Hit Something, and Now the Car Does Not Feel Right

There is usually a bang, and then something changes. The steering starts to shake, and the shake gets worse the faster you go. The car pulls to one side. Or the tyre begins going down and you find yourself watching the pressure warning light instead of the road. Potholes do this. So does a kerb taken at a bad angle on a tight turn, or a dark junction you did not quite judge.

A wheel is not just the thing the tyre sits on. The rim has to seal against the tyre bead to hold air, and it has to spin true. Put a flat spot or a dent in it and that seal can start letting go, slowly at first. Bend it and you will usually feel it as the speed builds — through the steering if it is a front wheel, through the seat and the floor if it is a rear one.

A crack is more serious again, because a crack under load has somewhere to go. If the wheel is losing air, or you can feel the damage through the steering, stop somewhere safe and call rather than pushing on to get home.

One thing to be plain about before you ring, because it saves everybody time. This is emergency work: assessing a damaged wheel at the roadside and getting your vehicle safely mobile again, day or night. It is not cosmetic alloy refurbishment. Kerb rash, scuffed rims, diamond cutting, powder coating and refinishing are a different trade with a different set of kit behind them — diamond cutting wants a lathe, powder coating wants an oven — and it is not work we take on.

If your wheel looks scruffy but the car drives fine, a refurbisher is who you want. If it is bent, dented, cracked or losing air, call us.

What Happens When We Get to You

Abu Bakar or a skilled mobile technician comes out in a fully equipped van, to the hard shoulder, your driveway or the car park at work. The wheel comes off properly, on the correct jacking point — low-profile EV-safe equipment if you drive an electric vehicle, heavy-duty jacks if it is a commercial van. If your locking wheel nut key has gone missing or the nut has rounded off, that need not stop the job either.

Extraction sockets come out, and a lost, damaged or rounded nut can usually be got off at the roadside without marking the alloy.

Then the wheel gets looked at properly, the inside face as well as the outside, with the tyre off the rim where the job needs it. Sometimes the wheel has come through it and the tyre took the hit instead — a split sidewall, or a bead that will not seat again. In that case a replacement can be supplied and fitted there and then, from Michelin, Pirelli, Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Dunlop and Yokohama, or from Nexen, Hankook, Firestone and Kumho if you would rather keep the cost down.

Dynamic balancing is done on the van before the wheel goes back on, so you are not driving away with a new vibration in place of the old one. The other wheel on the same side gets a look too, because a pothole the front wheel drops into is usually still there when the back one arrives.

And sometimes the honest answer is no. A cracked rim, particularly a crack running into a spoke or across the bead seat, is a structural problem, and depending where it runs, some cracked wheels cannot be made safe again at all — never mind at the side of a road in the dark. A heavy buckle can be the same story.

When that is what we are looking at, you will be told straight: this one needs replacing, or it needs a wheel specialist with a workshop behind them. If you carry a spare, it goes on so you can move. We would far rather say that to your face than put something back on your car we are not happy with.

Paying for it

What You Pay, and When

You pay when the job is finished and you are ready to drive away — never before we arrive. There is a mobile card terminal in the van taking contactless, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa and Mastercard, or you can settle by bank transfer, or with cash. No need to hunt for a cash machine at two in the morning.

On the cost itself, tell us your registration, your tyre size if you know it, and roughly what happened. A photo of the wheel sent over on WhatsApp tells us more than a description will, especially at night. Before anybody sets off you will be told what can be priced up front and what depends on what we find, so the bill holds no surprises.

If a locking nut has to be extracted, an additional charge may apply for that, and you will be given the amount before we dispatch rather than seeing it appear afterwards. And if the assessment says the wheel needs replacing or needs a specialist, you get told that straight, rather than being sold roadside work that was never going to fix it.

How Soon Somebody Can Reach You

ABS Tyres runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Potholes keep no hours, and a lot of wheel damage happens in the dark, in the wet, on a road nobody wants to be standing beside. Whenever it happens to you, the line is answered.

The response window for your area is set out below, area by area. It is honest rather than flattering — the run to Chichester is not the run to Hamble-le-Rice, and quoting them as though they were the same only leaves you watching the road for a van that is still miles away. The M27, M3 and A31 are monitored so the route can work around whatever is going on.

And because you are speaking to the technician rather than a call centre, the window you are given comes from the person who is actually driving to you.

  • Hamble-le-Rice

    Response window 45–60 minutes

  • Winchester

    Response window 45–60 minutes

  • New Forest

    Response window 45–60 minutes

Totton and the northern forest sit in the core window; Lymington and the southern edge are an outer-zone run.

  • Salisbury

    Response window 60–90 minutes

  • Bournemouth

    Response window 60–90 minutes

  • Chichester

    Response window 60–90 minutes

Where We Come Out To

We are based in Southampton and cover Southampton, Hamble-le-Rice, Winchester, the New Forest, Salisbury, Bournemouth and Chichester. The M27, M3 and A31 are the roads we keep an eye on, because what is happening on them decides how long the drive out to you actually takes. They are also the worst places to be standing next to a damaged wheel in the dark and the wet, which is reason enough to ring from where you are rather than press on to the next junction.

It does not have to be the roadside. Some of this starts on a driveway on a Sunday morning, when somebody walks out to the car and finds the tyre flat after a hit they had half forgotten about. We come to homes and workplaces as well, and a car park at work is a far better place to do this job than a hard shoulder. If the car got you there safely, stay where you are and call from there.

Questions Drivers Ask Us About Damaged Wheels

Can you repair kerb rash or refurbish my alloys?

No, and it is worth being clear about why. Cosmetic refurbishment covers scuffs, kerb rash, diamond cutting, painting and refinishing. It is a separate trade with its own kit behind it — a lathe for diamond cutting, an oven for powder coating — and it is not work this service takes on. What we do is emergency roadside work: assessing wheel damage and getting your vehicle safely mobile again. If the wheel is scruffy but sound, a refurbisher is who you need. If it is bent, dented, cracked or losing air, that is our job.

Can a cracked alloy wheel be repaired at the roadside?

Usually not, and we would rather tell you that now than have you find out later. A crack is a structural problem, and depending on where it runs, some cracked wheels cannot be made safe again at all. Welding a road wheel is workshop work, not roadside work. If a crack is what we find, the honest answer is a replacement wheel or a wheel specialist — and if you carry a spare, it goes on so you can get off the road.

Is it safe to drive on a buckled wheel?

That depends on how badly it is buckled and whereabouts, which is exactly why it is worth having somebody look rather than guessing at it. As a rule of thumb: if the wheel is losing air, or there is a shake through the steering that builds with speed, or the car is pulling, get somewhere safe and stop. On a motorway, do not sit in the car. Get out on the passenger side, go behind the barrier if there is one, and call from there.

What if I have lost my locking wheel nut key?

Don't panic. The van carries extraction sockets for lost, damaged and rounded-off locking nuts, so the wheel can usually still come off at the roadside without wrecking your alloy. An additional charge may apply for the extraction. You will be told what it is before we set off, rather than finding it on the bill at the end.

Do you really come out in the middle of the night?

Yes. The service runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, bank holidays included. Abu Bakar has over 15 years of hands-on experience in the trade, and either he or a skilled mobile technician will come out to you in a fully equipped van, whatever time the call comes in.

Hit a Pothole? Get the Wheel Looked At Before You Drive On

Tell us where you are, what you drive and what happened, and send a photo of the wheel on WhatsApp if you can manage it. Abu Bakar or a skilled mobile technician will come out to you, day or night, and you will get a straight answer about that wheel.
